Oude Molen provides a classy venue where
you can taste the brandy after an educational
experience in the cellar. Apparently 50
million litres of brandy is consumed per
year by South Africans…seems this
is a good business to be in!
Watch a presentation revealing the history
of the business with Rene Santhagens,
then venture into the massive factory
which stores huge 100 000 litre tanks
of brandy. There are two beautiful distillery
tanks where the main action happens –
affectionately named Big Bertha and Long
Tom – where the first and second
distillation takes place respectively.
After this the heart of the liquid is
divided into oak barrels and after 3 years
in the barrels it can be classified as
brandy.
This is a professionally run tour and
is very interesting to learn how brandy
is made. Come here to appreciate what
goes into making the bottle of brandy
– dedication and hard work. Somehow
drinking Oude Molen now and knowing it
was made in those massive copper tanks
by big Bertha and Long Tom, the brandy
tasted even better than picturing it on
a shelf in the liquor store.
