This is a truly romantic wine farm, with
an lovingly restored mill driven by a
huge water wheel and an original cellar
that retains an old fashioned honesty
about producing wine.
Jayne took us though the original thick
walled cellar which resembled a maze but
works as a fully functional cellar. She
showed us the renovated holding vats built
into the walls, as well as the open vats
that are a wine producing tradition that
has been forgotten but is being revived
globally. This, was once an 18 century
Dutch East India Company outpost, it also
has ancient, functional holding tanks
made of concrete where they store wine…no
need for these new fancy silver vats you
see…come here to Beaumont to experience
the traditional way of processing wine
– it is a fascinating learning experience!
There is also an art gallery that sells
Jayne’s and occasionally other artist’s
work. From time to time there is an exhibition
which includes Jayne’s daughter’s
jewellery so watch out for that!
There are gorgeous spots to picnic (bring
your own and call beforehand to confirm
entry) and also lovely walks starting
from the farm into the hills.
There are 2 beautifully restored historic
cottages offering authentic farm accommodation.
Nature and culture-lovers come here to
unwind and try the wine – my tip
for the top is the Raoul’s red….
Jayne is more than happy to show people
around the mill or cellar so give her
a call.
